Newport News Central athletes in action: Women's basketball

The following women's basketball players, both with Newport News Central high school ties, have scheduled action this week:

Christina Phelps, Randolph-Macon College
Position: Forward
High school: Heritage High School
This week: Saturday, Jan. 26, versus Washington and Lee University
About Phelps: Phelps is a junior forward and guard for Randolph-Macon College. She is a 2010 graduate of Heritage High School in Lynchburg, where she was named Play it Smart Student Athlete of the Month and made the Seminole District All-Academic Team. Phelps is from Lynchburg.

LaQuanda Younger, Old Dominion University
Position: Guard
High school: Warwick High School
This week: Sunday, Jan. 27, at College of William and Mary
About Younger: Younger, a 5-foot-10 freshman guard for Old Dominion University, is a 2012 graduate of Warwick High School. She earned all-state honors and was a two-time Peninsula Player of the Year during her high school career. The Newport News native is the daughter of Shirley Younger.
