Warwick High School students win at DECA competition

Eleven Warwick High School students were named overall winners at the District DECA competition held Jan. 10 in Hampton.

According to a press release from the school, the District DECA competition is open to students who are members of both the Virginia and National DECA organizations, enrolled in a marketing class and have completed a qualifying exam.

The first place overall winners in their respective categories were Zeke Brown for sports and entertainment marketing, Bethani Glover-Greaves for hotel and lodging management, Yadira Medina for restaurant food service management and David Williams for business finance.

The students who placed overall in their individual events were Azaria Brown, third place overall for business services marketing, Brianna Butler, third place overall for marketing management, Casey Gupton, third place overall for quick serve restaurant management and Khadijah Vasser, third place overall for human resources management.

Warwick students who placed in one but not overall in their category were Phillicia Lewis for human resources management and Justice Munroe and Kailah White for retail merchandising.

Warwick High School is located in midtown Newport News and is a comprehensive high school serving 1,650 students in grades nine through 12. It is the oldest of five high schools in the city. Warwick opened in 1926 as Morrison High School. It became Warwick High School in 1948, and the school's facilities were expanded to their present size in 1968. Dr. Rory Stapleton serves as the school's principal, and Warwick's mascot is the Raider.
